For whatever reason, despite others reading it and recommending it highly, I avoided it. Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson: Connected short stories about an unnamed heroin addict named “fuckhead” who drifts around the country, getting in and out of trouble. Tryout turned out to be the keyword, here. The unnamed narrator of the stories is an alcoholic drug addict who manages to survive through a mix of petty thievery, odd odd jobs, and straight-up bumming it. However, while all of these stories are amazing and inspiring, they pale in comparison to the greatest story ever told. A parable is often defined as “an earthly story with a heavenly meaning,” and Jesus used them regularly to teach his disciples. And so people believed that Elijah would return to announce the beginning of the messianic age. JESUS' SON was recommended to me as the perfect tryout book for Johnson's literature. Used to captivate and convict the hearts of his listeners, the parables of Jesus were simple tales with profound meanings. A child-friendly, lyrically written book that weaves 44 Bible stories into a common tapestry that clearly shows God's plan for mankind. Jesus' Son is almost a novel in short story form. The collection of short stories of Jesus' Son is something of a paradox. We in the Christian era view Elijah as prototype of the Jesus, the Christ – Messiah and Son of God. The story of how God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins! Now, in Matthew and in Luke, you have the expression the Son of God already in the infancy narratives, already referred to obliquely and sometimes directly in the story at Jesus' birth. In response to the criticism of the scribes and Pharisees who Each story centers on an item that has gone missing—a sheep, a coin, and a son.
